In the world of design, one has to be careful not to get into the drab and dreary creative rut of only using black, grey and white (difficult, I know. We love black & white.) – Sometimes colour can be a daunting prospect to a designer, what with difficult-to-please clients and sometimes the more obvious problems (for example: don’t use the colour red for a tampon brand?). But when the use of colour is executed correctly and helped along by a strong palette that supports your primary choice of colour, what you achieve can feel like a symphony.
For example: Wes Anderson – whose use of beautiful colour medleys and art direction is a unique brand to himself – has a little helping of inspiration for all of us – and – to make things easier for you, someone has actually put together a bunch of colour references.
So if you’re ever in need of inspiration, sit back, take a couple of minutes / hours and watch a movie – study it, pick it apart and ask why – what do you feel. Colour can invoke feelings and memories, just the same as music and photography – look beyond your monochrome monitor.
